Edema After Tummy Tuck

Let's clear up a lot of confusion before we go on much further. Many people believe that tummy tuck surgery is nothing more than liposuction in the area of the waist. This is not the case. The two are completely different.

Tummy tuck surgery is known as abdominoplasty and it is a form of cosmetic surgery designed to make the abdoment more firm. Generally the procedure removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. In a tummy tuck procedure no liposuction is performed to make the addomen firmer.

Liposuction involves the removal of fat tissue by sucking it out with tubes known as cannula. The fatty layer that protects the bowels is known as the omentum, and it is not considered safe to attempt fat removal from this area.
